The pictures of this series were taken in October 2015, in Magyarbóly and Zákány, situated at the border between Hungary and Croatia. The locality was one of those spots where the refugee crisis suddenly became a mechanism: the handling of the crowds required more and more efficient and organized presence from the authorities and the helpers. This way the encounter between the police and the refugees was reduced to quick, automatic motions, gestures, acts and orders, with the complete knock-off of the participants’ personality. This kind of facelessness bordering on invisibility of the refugee-mass presented an experience which turned my attention towards the potential of the symbolic processing and adaptation of space and power. As a visual form I chose the representation of the refugee-situation without any refugees, from which the presence or non-presence in the world unravels into issues that are approachable in diverse ways. |
